Surrey Business Club - a new format...

Surrey Business Club (SBC) is one of the UK's longest established independent business networking associations with a membership of 100+ at its peak. To this day it remains a not-for-profit organisation, funded and run by volunteer Members for the benefit of Members and Guests...

After more than 20 years as a subscription-based club meeting every month, in a formal venue with speakers, structured networking and buffet, SBC has changed its focus. The Club is now a social forum for local businesses, meeting one evening (usually a Wednesday) each month in public venues such as pubs, clubs and restaurants, for the usual SBC mix of business-related discussions and mutual support and friendship. There will also be the occasional game of golf, plus a Summer BBQ and Christmas Dinner.

The Club is not currently accepting new Members, but membership will continue free of charge for existing fully paid-up and honorary Members. Non-members and former members will be very welcome to join us for our informal meetings on a ‘pay for what you eat and drink’ basis, but are asked to please confirm their attendance in advance by emaiing the Club's Vice-Chair, NiS Member Deryck Svensson on deryck@webskills.co.uk

Meetings are scheduled by an email poll of Members and non-MEmber 'regulars' to find a date and venue that suits the majority and on rare occasions numbers able to attend are very low we may not have meeting that month. We will advise anybody who has booked if there are any such last minute changes.

Recently, I was asked to provide an article about my opinion on the 'Emergency Budget'. Long story, short: I said that I thought that it was "Good enough for the Coalition Government to wage war on profligracy". The MD of the Magazine company thought that it was a bit "strong" on politics - but politics, social networking, business, the economy - they are ALL completely interlinked. Even if we had no politicians per se, we would still have 'politics'.

It never ceases to amaze me that 'the man on the Clapham omnibus' hasn't figured that out. As Individuals, we all hold differing views - and long may that continue. It doesn't really matter which Political Party you belong to, you should have the freedom to have your say whenever you want (within reason). Being adamant about following one particular political party, even when you disagree with some of their agenda items, is just plain silly.

Remembering well my one of my Grammar School reader books ("Animal Farm" by George Orwell), I took a firm line against a University Professor who was fishing the same beat on the river Spey as I was, when he made a crass remark about 'New Labour', to whit: "I voted Labour, because I thought that they would improve Financial Aid to University research - but they haven't". I simply asked him "Did you never read 'Animal Farm' ?". The Professor thought for a moment (something that so-called Intellectuals appear to think is their prerogative) and then replied "Oh, I see what you mean !".

My message is simply this: "Please don't vote blindly, or follow promises, or even prospects of promises - use that rare commodity, Commonsense, and vote rationally and KEEP doing that".

"Never Assume that promises, or prospects of promises, are worth anything in any currency. Always keep debates alive. And then evaluate the politician/person/service provider on what they ACTUALLY achieve".

That's why my Number One Motto is "Never Assume - Communicate".
