How long should it take to sack a poor performer?

Teachers are in the news again, with allegations that it takes too long and is too difficult to dismiss poorly performing teachers. In the private sector, it is argued, incompetent employees can be given their marching orders much more easily, whereas in the public sector it can take up to a year to remove somebody. So what are the grounds on which an employee may be fairly dismissed, and what should an employer do, faced with an employee who is failing to perform? There are five potentially fair…See More

To pay or not to pay, that is the question....

Volunteers, interns, youngsters on work experience .... a great source of free labour, no need to worry about paying them the National Minimum Wage, right?Wrong! There is considerable confusion among employers about when they do and don’t need to pay people they take on for “work experience” purposes.Various schemes exist to help young people without any experience of the workplace to get a foothold in the employment market:school children are given “work experience” placements prior to their…See More

Sick and tired – going on holiday!

If one of your employees was signed off sick by their doctor, and sent you a postcard from the Costa del Sol, I expect your hackles would rise. Like most employers, you would probably think somebody who was too sick to work should be too sick to go on holiday. But it’s not quite that simple. For a start, somebody who is unfit to work due to stress or fatigue, or who is recuperating after surgery, may be perfectly capable of lying on a beach – in fact it may assist their recovery! Remember that…See More

Alcohol - how many units can your business take?

It’s not always easy to draw the line between what people do in their own time, which is arguably not the employer’s concern, and what happens in the workplace.  Surely, it is not the employer’s place to dictate what their employees do in the evenings or at weekends?Live and let live! And yet, when you consider the potential consequences to you and your company of employees being unfit for work due…See More

The banker, the bonus and the knighthood

What a week for bank bosses!  First Stephen Hester was pressured into foregoing his bonus of 3.6m shares as head of RBS.  Now his predecessor, Fred Goodwin, has been stripped of his knighthood.  And there’s not much sympathy around for either of them, tainted as they are by the unforgivable sin of being “fat cat bankers”. It’s interesting that the public furore focuses so much on the “bonus culture”, while little fuss is made of their very substantial salaries: Stephen Hester earns a basic…See More

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! (but stay safe...)

According to YouGov, 13% of SMEs were seriously impacted by last winter's severe weather, and 37% experienced weather-related problems, so it's worth preparing now for the possibility of another hard winter.Ensure you comply with your Health and Safety obligations:Clear and grit a pathway to the entrance to your premises, and grit your car park if you have one, to prevent accidents as people enter and leave the buildingCrank up the heating to make sure your workplace temperature is above the…See More

Criminal Record Checks - stay on the right side of the law!

A client called the other day to ask about Criminal Record checks.  The organisation had a number of vacancies involving working with high value products, and was concerned about entrusting new recruits with thousands of pounds’ worth of goods.  They wanted to run Criminal Record checks before making job offers to ensure the candidates were honest; on the face of it, a reasonable enough request on the part of a prudent employer.Unfortunately I had to advise him that this was not a lawful…See More

'Off sick' - but working for somebody else!

How would you react if one of your employees was off sick and receiving sick pay from you, and you found out that they were working for another employer at the same time?  My guess is that you’d feel justified in throwing the book at them.  But you’d do well to think carefully and establish all the facts first, or you might end up losing a Tribunal claim! An NHS Trust was recently faced with just such a situation.  A part time employee had a knee problem and was unable to fulfil her duties,…See More

Hello Surrey networkers!

Hi, I'm Mara and I have just joined the network. As a relative newcomer to self-employment, I find networking events both useful and enjoyable.  What is so refreshing is that the people I meet are so helpful and supportive; it's very different from the corporate world where nobody has time to share their wisdom with you.  There's so much to learn when you're out on your own, you have to do your own bookkeeping, marketing, selling.... It's nice to know there are others out there who have been…See More

Hi Mara

Lovely to meet you at 4N Cobham last Thursday...

Thanks for joining us, and welcome to the Networking in Surrey community. I hope you find the site useful for planning your networking.

When you get a moment, it would be great to see your photo in place of the 'anonymous silhouette' provided by the software!
